Pope Francis to preside all major ceremonies for Holy Week

2014-04-12

Holy Week will start on Sunday, April 13, marking one of the busiest periods of the year for the Pope. He will preside over all the major ceremonies.

On Palm Sunday, at 9:30AM, he will bless the olive trees in St. Peter's Square, where he will also celebrate Mass. Traditionally, the Pope specifically addresses young people in the Square.

The morning of Holy Thursday, he will celebrate the so called Chrism Mass at St. Peter's Basilica. Later on, he will visit a center for disabled and elderly people, where he will celebrate Mass, and will wash the feet of 12 patients.

As usual, on Good Friday, Pope Francis will preside the ceremony of the Lord's Passion. The person in charge of delivering this year's homily will be the Preacher to the Papal Household, Italian priest Raniero Cantalamessa.

At 9:15PM that same day, he will take part in the famous Stations of the Cross at the Colosseum.

The Easter Vigil will take place at St. Peter's Basilica on Saturday evening. Pope Francis will then preside the Liturgy of Light, one of the most striking moments of Holy Week.

On Easter Sunday, Resurrection Mass will start at 10:15AM at St. Peter's Square. Once finished, Pope Francis will give his blessing "Urbi et Orbi.”
