May 18, 2015. Msgr. Oscar Romero was adopted as a patron of Caritas Internationalis, according to an announcement that came just after the organization's General Assembly in Rome ended. The former Archbishop of San Salvador will be beatified on May 23, more than 35 years after he was assassinated while performing Mass.
Young Brazilians from WYD 2013 in Rio handed over the iconic World Youth Day Cross to a group of young Poles, representing WYD 2016 in Krakow.
This handover ceremony takes place with each WYD since 1984, when John Paul II presented the Cross to the world's youth.
During the Angelus, Pope Francis brought up this anniversary, and recalled that on April 27, the blessed Polish Pope would become a saint.
"John Paul II, who kicked off World Youth Day, will became its patron saint. In the communion of saints, he will continue to be a father and friend for the world's youth.”
The Pope also referenced another event with young people, just a few months away. He will travel to South Korea for Asian Youth Day.
"In this context, I am happy to announce that, God willing, this upcoming August 15, in Deajeon, South Korea, I will meet with youth from Asia, in their great continental gathering.”
With the Angelus, Pope Francis closed off Palm Sunday Mass, kicking off the celebrations for Holy Week, one of the busiest periods for the Pope.
