Helen Alvaré looks into ways to address family issues

2014-04-30

One of the main challenges of the Catholic Church is appropriately addressing all the problems faced by modern day families.

University professor and expert, Helen Alvaré, believes that creativity has a lot to do with engagement and that includes the actual wording and language that's being used to explain things.

HELEN ALVARÉ
Professor of Law, George Mason University (USA)
"So, before introducing the language of the Church and before explaining that love is the meaning of life, we should begin by focusing on the personal experience of people.  I think that having this as a starting point, would be a great approach that would get a lot of attention.”

Alvaré traveled to Rome to take part in a conference in Rome's Santa Croce University, titled Church Communications: 'Creative Strategies for Promoting Cultural Change.' She says Pope Francis is a great example of using creativity to get a message across.

HELEN ALVARÉ
Professor of Law, George Mason University (USA)
"His approach of loving the person first, of doing what Pope Benedict wrote in Deus Caritas Est 'Giving every person the look of love they crave.' To begin with the person and not with the doctrine or with a rule book.”

Helen Alvaré is an adviser for the Pontifical Council for the Laity and chair of the Catholic Women's Forum.

She also leads a project titled "Women Speak for Themselves” which opposes president Obama's policies on women's health and the family.
