Vatican reform back on the agenda for Council of Cardinals

2014-06-30

The Council of Cardinals, the group that advises the Pope on Church governance and Curia reform, will begin their fifth meeting at the Vatican on Tuesday.

The eight cardinals and the Pope will likely be joined by Secretary of State Pietro Parolin. They will meet for four days at Casa Santa Marta, until Friday, July 4th.

This time around, the Council will have the Vatican Bank's 2014 annual report at their disposal, released in mid-May. The report also included information on the Administration of the Patrimony of the Apostolic See (APSA).

Italian and Vatican media reports have also hinted at a possible overhaul of the communications departments. They suggest that the Council could consolidate the Vatican's media groups, including their radio, television and newspaper, under one structure.

This move would not be unusual. Following their December session, the Pope announced the creation of a Commission for the Protection of Minors, to address sex abuse and help victims. In their next meeting, in February, he established the Secretariat of the Economy, under the leadership of G8 member Card. George Pell.

In their previous meetings, the G8 completed their reviews of the Vatican congregations and the pontifical councils. They also heard from the president of the Commission for Reference on the Organization of the Economic-Administrative Structures of the Holy See

Despite these efforts, the Council of Cardinals ruled out the possibility of completing their work by year's end. Instead, the Vatican said they should wrap up sometime in 2015.
