Pope Francis met with Italian Bishops on Monday afternoon in the Vatican. The bishops are currently taking part in their plenary assembly.

After the initial prayer, Pope Francis talked about their daily responsibilities. He highlighted what ecclesial and pastoral sensibilities really mean on a practical level.

POPE FRANCIS
'Ecclesial sensibility, like good pastors, makes us go beyond the people of God to defend it from  ideological colonizations that take away identity and human dignity.â?

Ecclesial sensibility said the Pope, consists in not overlooking corruption in public and private life. Doing so, said the Pope, has impoverished entire communities. He then added that they should allow the laity to have more prominent roles.

POPE FRANCIS
'Lay people with an authentic Christian formation, shouldn't need a pilot Bishop or a pilot Monsignor, or a clerical presence to take on responsibilities on all levels. From the political to the social. From the economic to the legislative.â?

The Pope then added that ecclesial sensibility is reflected in collegiality and Communion. These two points, he added are not being given their proper role. From the stark differences between rich and poor dioceses to convents where young religious and elderly religious are not assigned equally in numbers.
