Pope Announces Special Year Of Priests

He made his announcement before the Plenary of the Congregation for the Clergy whose chosen theme was “The Identity of a Missionary Priest in the Church,” and went on to talk about the different dimensions of priesthood.

Benedict XVI“If the whole Church is missionary, and every Christian, by virtue of Baptism and Confirmation, receives a mandate to publicly profess their faith, the priesthood, even from this point of view, is distinguished ontologically, not just in degree from the baptismal priesthood also called common priesthood.”

The “Year for Priests” will coincide with the 150th anniversary of the death of Saint Jean Marie Vianney, who the Pope calls “a true example of a pastor at the service of Christ?s flock."
