The table is set for the beatification of Cardinal Newman in September

Jack ValeroMedia Spokesman for Beatification of Card. Newman“This is important because five years ago when he became pope he said he wouldn?t do beatification himself, they would be done by the local bishops. However this time he has decided he would do it himself.”

Newman?s beatification will be the first over which Benedict XVI will preside personally, giving greater stature to the figure of Cardinal Newman. ; This highlights the beatification as the most important ceremony of the Pope?s visit to the United Kingdom.

Jack ValeroMedia Spokesman for Beatification of Card. Newman“We don?t know how many people are to come but this would be the biggest event of the visit. Perhaps a quarter a million people would come to the beatification.”

The ceremony will take place in the old airport of Coventry, where John Paul II celebrated Mass in 1982.

Cardinal Newman was an Anglican priest who converted to Catholicism in 1845. ; He had great influence on English Catholics and on the Church as a whole.

Jack ValeroHead of Press, Beatification of Card. Newman“ In that sense he is very very influential. His teaching, which he wrote and spoke about in the 19th century influenced the second Vatican council in the 1960?s ; and the way we look at the church today is something Newman influenced.”

According to Jack Valero, the most interesting thing about Cardinal Newman is the wide variety of Catholics who admire him. ; Many see him as a man who converted because he saw the Catholic Church as a guardian of doctrine.

The celebration of Cardinal Newman will most likely take place October 9, the day when he was officially received by the Catholic Church.
