Pope tells new Patriarch of Maronite Church to spread Gospel with urgency

Patriarch Rai now faces the challenge of uniting the Maronite Catholic Church which has been divided among political lines. The pope spoke to the patriach about the Synod of Bishops in the Middle East which took place last October and expressed the urgency he felt in proposing the Gospel to those who had moved away from the Church or never been exposed to it. The government of Lebanon is also seeing some changes, with the appointment of Najib Mikati as prime minister in January. Patriarch Rai traveled to Rome with an official delegation of the Lebanese government and has called for quickly forming a new Lebanese cabinet headed by Prime Minister Mikati. AECTVHC-BN
