Catholic media to meet in Lebanon to promote peace in Middle East
This year's theme is "Media for Culture of Peace: Creating Images with the New Generation.â? It is the first time the gathering will take place in the Middle East.
"This Congress can promote the peace and target the young people, because Lebanon is full of young people. And then they will work together, Muslims and Christians. Young people are not like us old people, they are spontaneous, they are creative, they are full of energy, and this is the energy that Church needs.â?
Noursat-Téle Lumií¨re (Lebanon)
"Lebanon has suffered from many wars because of a lack of peace. And today has work in reconciliation and dialogue and rebuilding peace. So specially the young people, they need this peace-building in their lives. They need to know the values of good media and how to use the media for peace. For Christian values, human values.â?
The conference will feature the participation of religious leaders and communities, but not just from Lebanon. There are also several groups from Egypt, Israel, Iraq and even Syria.
The Pontifical Council for Social Communications is among the sponsors. It recently organized a workshop on communication for Middle East bishops, and recalls the visit by Benedict XVI to Lebanon one year ago.
ARCH. CLAUDIO MARIA CELLI
President, Pontifical Council for Social Communications
"It also seems important to me that in this multicultural and inter-religious context we speak about peace, about a culture of peace, and that we rediscover once again the importance that mass media has in promoting this culture.â?
The Signis World Congress brings together young people interested in communications. They receive the tools needed to learn how to convey Christian values through film or social networks. More than 600 people took part in the previous conference, in 2009 in Thailand.
