Pope Francis welcomes new Portuguese ambassador to the Holy See

Antonio Carlos Carvalho di Almeida Ribeiro presented his credentials to Pope Francis during their brief exchange in Spanish. The Portuguese ambassador, also introduced his family. "Nice to meet you.

His two sons brought Pope Francis gifts, including his eldest, who prides himself in speaking "porteño,â? as the Spanish dialect in Buenos Aires is called. "This is the one that Speaks porteño.â? "I have something to give you, two rosaries.â? "I will bless them.â?

The young man also leads a Catholic movement back home, where they team up to sponsor married couples. He had a message from his couple to the Pope. "The couple that my team sponsors suffers from pancreatic cancer, and so from Panama they write this letter, and ask that you pray for them. "I will do it.

Another family members also gave him a cross, suggesting playfully that the Pope use it during his daily Mass at Casa Santa Marta. This made everyone laugh.

After introducing his family, he also introduced several Portuguese bishops, and presented the Pope an interesting gift: A bottle of wine with a crystal glass and cork. The Pope in turn gave the family a papal medallion.

The Portuguese diplomat was appointed earlier this year, but had not been confirmed since Benedict's resignation and the election of Francis.
