Pope Francis arrives in Copacabana for WYD welcoming ceremony with youths

After a brief helicopter flight, Pope Francis arrived at Rios Copacabana, the main venue of WYD 2013. On his popemobile, the Pope traveled along the road that follows the coastline. But the cheering crowd, over 1 million youths, was so great the car took over one hour to make the roughly 3 mile journey.

As usual, the car also stopped several times, so that Pope Francis could personally meet and bless some of the children and pilgrims. At some point, the Pope even wore a 'papal hat' given to him by a pilgrim, and drank a few sips of mate, the traditional Argentinian beverage he loves so much. Then, the Pope reached the stage especially built for the occasion and began the official Welcoming Ceremony of WYD 2013. BB CTV GDP -BN up:VIC
