Change of Plans for WYD: Bad weather prompts change of venue
Bringing hundreds of thousands of people under one same roof, is never easy. Thats especially true if the weather isnt that great. World Youth Days Organizing Committee decided that due to theconstant rain, the closing ceremony will no longer be at Rios Guaratiba open air field.
Days of heavy showers have turned the area into a massive puddle. So now, Saturday's Vigil and the Pope's Sunday's Mass, will no longer take place there. Instead, those closing events will be moved to Copacabana, the same exact spot where Pope Francis was welcomed by thousands of youths on Thursday night. ; The space is smaller and unfortunately there won't be room for all the pilgrims. Some had planned on spending the night there out on the beach on Saturday, to save a spot for Sunday's Mass. But now, organizers say that won't be an option. Rio de Janeiro mayor, Eduardo Paes is hopeful. He said local authorities will rise to the occasion adding that no more problems are expected because of the rainy weather. Since the ; start of WYD, the rain and wind has posed a challenge, with hundreds of thousands of youths braving the weather event after event. It's been a similar case for the Pope. On Wednesday, he flew to the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Aparecida on a plane, instead of a helicopter because of the strong winds. On Thursday, the satellite connection of the Pope's welcoming ceremony was cut off, because of a weather complication. So, now, organizers are doing everything they can to make sure the closing events go on smoothly as possible. JRB/KLH CTV JM -PR Up:JRB
