Pope Francis welcomes new Brazilian ambassador
With good spirits, Pope Francis welcomed the incoming Brazilian ambassador to the Holy See, Denis Fontes, on Friday morning at the Vatican. The new ambassador from the worlds largest Catholic country presented his credentials to the Pope.
"You can speak to me in Portuñol, if you would like.â?
"You speak to me in Brazilian!â?
An experienced diplomat, Fontes comes to the Vatican after having worked at the embassies in Germany, Ecuador, China, France, South Africa and Belgium.
After a brief chat, the diplomat introduced his wife and one of his two sons, as well as the embassy staff. His government appointed him to the Vatican post just before Pope Francis' trip to Brazil for WYD.
"Your Excellency, pray for me.â?
"Yes, of course.â?
After handing them papal medallions, the Pope asked the delegation to pray for him. He ended the audience by asking the ambassador to send his greetings to Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff.
The Pope has shown great fondness for that South American country. One of his first audiences with heads of state was with Rousseff, while his first international trip was to Rio de Janeiro in July.
