European initiative to protect life gathers needed signatures
For over six months, the European citizens initiative titled "One of Usâ? has worked non-stop to gather the one million signatures the European Parliament requires to debate it. On Friday, the group announced they reached their goal. Their supporters included Pope Francis, who back in May wished them success.
POPE FRANCIS (May 12, 2013) "It brings me great joy to see that so many Italian parishes are taking part in the pro-life signature campaign. This initiative titled 'One of Us,' guarantees the legal protection of the embryo, protecting human life from the very start.â?
Even though they've reached the number of required signatures, organizers said they'll continue to gather signatures until October 31. They'll also celebrate their success on September 22, with a feast in each participating country.
So far, "One of Usâ? is only the second European citizen's initiative to gather one million signatures. The first, which seeks to make water access a fundamental human right, was presented a few months ago. But they gathered all of their signatures in Germany.
"One of Usâ? had support from groups in many European countries. The largest number of signatures, some 350,000, came from Italy.
