Cardinal Raffaele Farina turns 80. Number of Cardinal electors drops to 110

Italian Cardinal, Raffaele Farina turns 80 on September 24th. That means he will no longer have the right to vote in an eventual conclave. The College of Cardinals now stands at 110 cardinal electors and 91 non electors. ; ;

Cardinal Farina was born in the Italian city of Buonalbergo. He joined the Salesians at age 16 and was ordained in 1958. Over the years, he has been very active in the field of culture. ;

In 1997, he began working in the Vatican Library. Ten years later he also became custodian of the Vatican's Secret Archives. ;

His main objective was to facilitate access to works of the Vatican's literature department and eliminate its mysterious reputation. Among his greatest achievements there's the restoration of the Vatican Library and the exhibition of 400 years of the Secret Archives. ;

In 2007 he was made a Cardinal by Benedict XVI and he participated in the 2013 conclave. ;

A few months ago, Cardinal Farina left his post as librarian but he is still very active. Pope Francis also named him a member of the committee that advises the Pope on reforming the so called 'Vatican Bank.' ;
