Legionaries of Christ announce extraordinary chapter to change Constitution for January

Cardinal Velasio De Paolis, the Vaticans representative overseeing the Legionaries of Christ, called an extraordinary general chapter in Rome for January 8. ; ;

Following the discovery of the scandalous lifestyle of the institute's founder, Marcial Maciel, Benedict XVI placed the group under the stewardship of Cardinal De Paolis. The general chapter is the latest step in the renewal of the Legionaries. The main goal will be to elect new leadership, and to rewrite its governing laws.

Cardinal De Paolis said the meetings are expected to last for nearly two months. At the end of the general chapter, they will present their changes to Pope Francis for approval.

In all, about 60 people are expected to participate in the gathering. One third will be the institute's international and regional leaders, while the remaining two thirds will be delegates elected by the members from across the world.
