Flag throwers give surprise welcome to Pope Francis during General Audience
Pope Francis was not expecting a welcome like this for Wednesday's General Audience: a Medieval reenactment group from southern Italian city of Carovigno.
They traveled over 300 miles to see Pope Francis and show him their colorful costumes, their drums and trumpets, and their acrobatic displays using flags.
"We're a historical reenactment group. It's based on the deeply-rooted traditions from our town, using flags.â?
"There's a long historical tradition behind it. More than anything, we use flags, trumpets, drums, everything.â?
In the Middle Ages, these flags were essential in battle. Each move and toss conveyed a message to groups farther away.
In Rome, the group's performance caught many tourists and pilgrims by surprise.
But the over-the-top performance, with actors of all ages, accomplished something more. It filled the Vatican and the surround streets with culture and music.
