Ecuadorian Cardinal Chiriboga turns 80, papal electors down to 107
The start of the New Year in 2014 is also the end of eligibility for Cardinal Raul Eduardo Vela Chiriboga, to vote in a conclave. The archbishop emeritus of Quito (Ecuador) turns 80 years old on January 1. ;
Card. Chiriboga was ordained a priest in 1957. Over the course of the next four decades he led several dioceses across Ecuador, eventually appointed as archbishop of Quito in 2003. Benedict XVI created him cardinal in 2010.
Through he will remain a member of the College of Cardinals, there are now only 107 papal electors.
Overall, there are 199 living cardinals; 92 of them are over the age of 80, and therefore unable to take part in an eventual conclave.
