LIVE: Pope ordains three new bishops


Beginning at 5 p.m., Pope Francis will ordain three new bishops in St. Peter's Basilica.

Among the bishops is Alfred Xuereb, born in Malta almost 60 years ago. He was secretary for Benedict XVI and also Pope Francis, who later named him number two for the Secretariat for the Economy. Pope Francis sent him as a nuncio to Korea.

He will also ordain the Polish Waldemar Stanisław Sommertag, who is 50 years old and will be nuncio in Nicaragua. Until now, he was working as a senior official of the Secretariat of State.

The third new bishop is José Avelino Bettencourt, 55 years old. He is head of protocol in the Secretariat of State and nuncio in Georgia and Armenia.
