They come from Krefeld, Germany, as part of a post-medieval Catholic association established to protect their city. Every three years, they hold a traditional shooting competition, the winner of which becomes king.

This year, for the first time in the association's 400 years, that person was a woman. It was an occasion so special it called for a trip to the Vatican to meet Pope Francis.

“This time is the first time in 407 years a woman is a queen. It's not a king, it's a queen. I am very proud to have so many wonderful people around me.” 01:28 – 01:38 “We were very happy when he stared at our clothes. The Swiss Guard took us upstairs with the pope and we were very close to him.”

The pope himself appeared to be surprised by the peculiar, colorful costumes during the General Audience.

“Really, it's the first time since 1611. I think pope Francis is an extraordinary pope. His opinions are very new. Before Francis it was Benedetto, our German pope. They both are popes here in Rome, and I think they join together also in their opinions.”

They assure they like Pope Francis, but cannot forget their German pope. In fact, they remembered his 91st birthday.

“We drank good Italian wine and said, Happy birthday!”

With music and high spirits, these 49 soldiers from Germany gave St. Peter's Square a colorful touch, and now they hope to repeat the experience in the Eternal City three years from now.
