LIVE: Pope Francis celebrates Mass in United Arab Emirates

The Muslim authorities have permitted the celebration of Mass in the capital's stadium, Zayed Sports City.

The stadium will host 45,000 people inside; and it is expected 100,000 more will be following the ceremony from outside.

Islam is the UAE's official religion, and citizens there are unable to change religion.

However, from 1965 onward, under the British protectorate, the country has become more tolerant to the one million foreigners living in the country.

In the UAE exist various Christian denominations. Christians account for nine percent of the country's population and many of them are Filipino, Indian or Pakistani migrants.
