LIVE: Pope beatifies 7 martyrs who kept the faith during communism

Since 1948, Stalin ordered the communist authorities to outlaw the Romanian Greek Catholic Church. He forced all Catholics to convert to the Orthodox Church.

The bishops refused and subsequently were threatened, imprisoned and ultimately murdered.

600 priests in total were imprisoned, and even cemeteries were expropriated.

Pope Francis will beatify seven of them and consecrate an icon depicting the martyrs.
