LIVE: Pope inaugurates Extraordinary Missionary Month

Extraordinary Missionary Month begins at 6 p.m. in St. Peter's Basilica, where Pope Francis will preside over the prayer of the Vespers.

This initiative aims to sensitize the Church at all levels about the urgent need to evangelize.

In his message for this year's World Mission Day, he recalls why he chose to have a period dedicated to missions:

I have asked the whole Church, that during the month of October, 2019, we live an extraordinary missionary time to commemorate the centenary of the promulgation of Pope Benedict XV's apostolic letter, Maximum Illud (Nov. 30, 1919). The prophetic vision of his apostolic proposal has confirmed that today, it is still important to renew the missionary commitment of the Church, and to evangelize its mission of proclaiming and bringing the world the salvation of Jesus Christ, dead and risen.
