LIVE: The pope visits St. John Lateran

Pope Francis celebrates Mass at the dedication of the Basilica of St. John Lateran, the oldest and highest-ranking church among the four major basilicas in Rome.

The ceremony starts at 5:30 p.m., Rome time. During it, the pope will bless a new ambo, made from a slab of the temple of Constantine. He'll also bless a suspended cross that will adorn the interior of the Basilica.

St. John Lateran is considered “the mother and the head” of all the churches of the Eternal City and of the world, as it is the episcopal seat of the Bishop of Rome, the pope.
