The pope was clearly happy in his first meeting with pilgrims after the lockdown due to the pandemic.

POPE FRANCIS
Today the square is open. We can see each other again! What a joy!

The pope wanted to pay tribute to the doctors, nurses and volunteers who got infected when caring for the sick.

POPE FRANCIS
“I gratefully remember and admire those who, while caring for the sick in this pandemic, gave their lives. Let us pray silently for the doctors, volunteers, nurses, all health workers and many others who have given their lives during this period.”

Pope Francis also asked that priority be given to people's health, especially those who do not have the resources to pay for treatment. The pope is also concerned about the situation for Amazonian peoples, for whom nobody cares

POPE FRANCIS
'Many people have been infected and have died, also in indigenous communities, who are particularly vulnerable. I ask that no one lack medical attention. Take care of people, don't save for the economy. Take care of people; they are more important than the economy.”

Pope Francis said goodbye with a smile, 'see you soon, in this same square.'

The police only allowed a few hundred pilgrims into St. Peter's Square, so distance was maintained and possible infections avoided.
