The Pontifical Council for the Promotion of the New Evangelization has presented the “Directory for Catechesis.” It's an extensive document containing practical pastoral recommendations on how to organize catechesis. It also explains some of the most important papal documents.

MSGR. RINO FISICHELLA
President, Pontifical Council for the Promotion of the New Evangelization
“The Church is facing a great challenge in the form of digital culture. Focusing on a phenomenon that imposes itself as global requires that those who are responsible for the formation do not prevaricate.”

This is the third catechetical directory. The first and second, published respectively in 1971 and 1997, marked the last 50 years of the history of catechesis. Now, this new text seeks to meet Christians' current needs.

MSGR. OCTAVIO RUIZ ARENAS
Secretary, Pontifical Council for the Promotion of the New Evangelization
“Catechesis is called to a renewal that cannot consist only of a change of strategy, nor of creating discourses that are simply more appealing.”

The secretary of the Vatican department responsible for the text, Msgr. Octavio Ruiz Arenas, says the main objective of the new directory is to transmit the faith, with an awareness of how society today witnesses to the faith.

MSGR. OCTAVIO RUIZ ARENAS
Secretary, Pontifical Council for the Promotion of the New Evangelization
“As a matter of fact, the Church no longer lives in a Christian regime, but in a secular society, in which the phenomenon of growing distant from the faith is exacerbated by the loss of a sense of the sacred as well as by Christian values being questioned.”

Now the bishops' conferences will have to develop specific models for catechesis, with the goal of guaranteeing a true cultivation of the faith.
