The date coincides with the Ratzinger brothers' first Mass after their priestly ordination. It was in 1951.

Georg Ratzinger passed away on July 1 at the age of 96. For decades, he directed the cathedral's children's choir, one of the most prestigious in the world. Throughout his final days, the cathedral allowed pilgrims to say their last goodbye to Benedict XVI's brother.
