The pope emeritus wrote an open letter of thanks for the affection received after the death of his brother, who passed away on July 1.

He says he did not expect so many letters of support. He points out that he was “deeply moved.” He also regrets not responding personally to each one due to a case of shingles that broke out on the day of his departure to Germany to visit his dying brother.

The letter is dated August and would be the first time that the 93-year-old pope emeritus, the longest living pontiff in history, speaks publicly after his brother's death.
