In recent times the debate on the defense of life has marked politics and international debate. Despite being protected in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which states that:

“All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights. They are endowed with reason and conscience and should act towards one another in a spirit of brotherhood.”

(Article 1, universal declaration of human rights)

POPE FRANCIS
“The attacks on the dignity and life of people unfortunately also continue in our era, which is the era of universal human rights. Indeed, we are faced with new threats and a new slavery, and laws don't always protect the weakest and most vulnerable human.”

For Christianity, the defense of life is not simply a matter of faith. Philosophy Professor Luigi Maria Epicoco says that 'the Gospel illuminates valid reasoning, not only for those who have the gift of faith.”

LUIGI MARIA EPICOCO
Professor, Pontifical Lateran University
'It is difficult to make a society understand that it is no longer built around people and relationships, but around usefulness. This leads to human life not being judged by itself but by what it produces. It is dangerous to think that when a human being stops being productive, that person is useless, and can be dismissed.'

He reminds people that for Jesus, a person is worth something simply because of his or her existence. He warns that if society forgets to recognize each person's dignity, it risks losing the sense of humanity and becoming something else.

LUIGI MARIA EPICOCO
Professor, Pontifical Lateran University
“Christianity bears witness to the contrary, not because it wants to bring a fundamentalist and religious vision, but because it wants to put the dignity of the person at its core. Always, with or without faith. If we were to put the person back at the center there would be no contrasts. the contrasts should only be made in front of reasons and not to cross slogans. Now it seems that politics and a certain culture clash for slogans and not for reason.”

He says the key is to promote true thinking, which leads to finding common ground to rediscover the importance of dignity in today's age.
