The pope is closely following the natural disasters that are devastating Central America. The President of Colombia, for example, pointed out that in Providencia Island, Hurricane Iota, affected 98% of its infrastructure.

POPE FRANCIS
I would like to express my closeness to the people of Central America, hit by strong hurricanes. In particular, I recall the Island of San Andrés, Providencia, and Santa Catalina, as well as the Pacific coast of the north of Colombia. I pray for all the countries who are suffering as a result of these disasters.

This was the first Sunday of Advent, so Pope Francis gave three tips on how to deeply live the Advent season during the current pandemic.

POPE FRANCIS
Let us try to bring out the good even from the difficult situation that the pandemic imposes upon us: greater sobriety, discreet and respectful attention to others who may be in need, some prayer also within the family, with simplicity. These three things will help us greatly.

The pope also asked for prayers for the thirteen new cardinals. He also thanked those present in the consistory for showing their closeness to the newest cardinals.
