Families looking to switch things up for this year's Christmas lunch, dinner and everything in between, can get cooking with Chef David Geisser's new “Vatican Christmas Cookbook.”

After the success of “Buon Appetito,” the former Pontifical Swiss Guard put together this festive sequel, which includes recipes for Advent, Christmas and even the Epiphany. He hopes it will help families spend quality time in the kitchen, especially those whose usual festivities and outings have been disrupted by the pandemic.

“I think in the pandemic, you also have to be happy, and I think with food, you can make people happy, and we have a lot of recipes inside which you share together, which you eat together. If you can't go out, maybe you have more time to be in the kitchen and cook for your family, for your kids, for your friends.”

Recipes include the Linguine Carbonara,... Chocolate Cake Surprise,... Falafel,... Pistachio Torrone... and countless others. With all these mouth-watering options, Chef David understandably finds it difficult to choose a single favorite, but he assures that the fondue is a top contender, confiding that it was one of the most popular among his fellow Swiss Guards.

“In the Swiss Guard, we didn't have the possibility to make big menus, so to make fondue is very easy because you need bread, and you need cheese and a pan.”

The “Vatican Christmas Cookbook” is a healthy balance of easy-to-make meals and fancier, impress-the-in-laws gourmet dishes, and although the recipes in the book are largely inspired by popes and other important Church figures, and feature cuisine from different parts of the world, it was in his own home that Geisser's love for the culinary arts first began to simmer.

“My mother is a fantastic chef. She didn't learn as a chef, but at home, I don't know anyone who can cook better than my mother. So I think she is a big inspiration for me.”

Geisser has a number of ongoing projects with his cooking studio and TV show to share his passion with others. He also hopes he can soon give Pope Francis a copy of the “Vatican Christmas Cookbook.”
