Italy has launched an ambitious vaccination plan in response to the pandemic. With nearly a quarter of the country’s population over the age of 65, it can be difficult for everyone who needs a vaccine to get one.

FR. ANDREA CELLI
St. Pius X Parish (Rome)
“My mother is 88 years old! When I took her to get vaccinated I thought about all of the elderly people in my parish who couldn’t go by themselves, or who couldn’t even register for the vaccine because it’s done online. I thought the parish might be able to help them. 00:56

“Charity is lived through actions. This is an emergency we have to respond to as a Church.” 01:24

Andrea and Margherita are volunteers at St. Pius X parish in Rome. Since the fall they have been helping the elderly during the pandemic.

MARGHERITA GASPARRO
Volunteer, St. Pius X Parish (Rome)
“Since November we’ve been going to Maria’s house. We spend the afternoon with her and help her buy groceries at the supermarket. We give her our time, but in return she brings us great joy. Many young people are getting involved with this initiative.”

This time, Andrea and Margherita are taking Maria to get her Covid vaccine at a hospital near their church.

-It’s Margherita, ma’am!

-You’re here! Should I come down?

-We’ll come up and get you!

MARIA PENNA
“It’s incredible, really! They are great kids, intelligent, caring, and kind. They are like grandchildren to me! 00:15 –

When I go to the parish church I feel at home. Father Andrea has made us better people. He’s taught us the meaning of charity.” 01:03

Already wearing her mask, Maria heads outside with Margherita. Where Andrea is waiting for them on the street.

These are the most beautiful things in life!

The rain doesn’t stop them from reaching their destination: the Santa Maria della Pietà hospital in Rome.

After waiting in line, Maria’s name is called. Margherita stays by her side, attentive to every detail until they finally reach their goal: receiving the vaccine.

It’s a simple gesture of charity in a time of struggle. A sign of hope in building a post-pandemic world.
