Pope Francis has named South Korean Bishop Lazzaro You Heung-Sik the Prefect of the Congregation for the Clergy, the Vatican office that oversees the more than 400 thousand priests around the world.

In 2014, the Bishop accompanied the Pope during his visit to South Korea for Asian Youth Day.

And in 2018, Bishop Lazzaro You Heung-Sik intervened during the youth synod. His participation coincided with an indirect invitation from the North Korean regime to Pope Francis to travel to Pyongyang.

“If the pope were there, it would be a gigantic step. It would be a qualitative step for the pacification of the Korean peninsula.”

Until the South Korean Bishop assumes his new role, Cardinal Beniamino Stella will continue to act as Prefect.

It is very likely that the South Korean Bishop will be made a Cardinal in the near future, since prefects of the Holy See's congregations are members of the College of Cardinals.
