Pope Francis in the hospital for scheduled colon surgery

(TEXT ONLY) The Vatican announced that on Sunday afternoon, Pope Francis was admitted to Gemelli Hospital in Rome for a scheduled surgery for symptomatic diverticular stenosis of the colon.

It isn't a last-minute surgery. In fact, for the last few days, the Pope had been asking for prayers more insistently.

The Vatican has promised to give an update on the surgery as soon as it is completed.
