Pope Francis bid farewell to his master of ceremonies, Guido Marini, with this celebration in St. Peter's Basilica.

Marini was ordained a bishop alongside the new secretary for the Congregation of the Clergy, Chilean priest Andres Ferrada Moreira. He was one of the first priests to believe the testimony of survivors sexually abused by Fr. Fernando Karadima in Chile.

It was a very solemn ceremony. Before ordaining the new bishops, the Pope explained what their duties will entail.

POPE FRANCIS
Many times someone may say: '”I have so many things to do that I can't pray.” Stop yourself. When the apostles “invented” the diaconate, what does Peter say? “And to us—the bishops—prayer and the proclamation of the Word.” The first duty of a bishop is to pray—not like a parrot—to pray with the heart, pray. “I don't have time.” No. Remove the other things, but praying is a bishop's first duty.

After the homily began the rite of episcopal ordination.

Will you pray unceasingly to almighty God for his holy people and exercise the ministry of the high priesthood beyond reproach?

Yes, I will.

At this point, the priests who will be ordained bishops lay flat on the ground while invoking the saints....

The Pope then lays his hands on them....

The final part of the rite involves holding the open Gospel over their heads, since Bishops are tasked with proclaiming the Word of God.

At the end of the ceremony, Guido Marini addressed a heartfelt word of thanks to the Pope on behalf of the two new bishops, and to their families.

GUIDO MARINI
Many said of the Holy Priest of Ars after meeting him: 'We have seen God in a man.' May our people also say of us that they have seen the good shepherd in their bishop. Thank you to our families and our parents, some are among us. Others have already reached the other side of the sea of life. We would not be here today without them.

Several members of the Roman Curia were present, since the two new bishops are held in high regard throughout the Vatican.

Andres Ferrada Moreira has been working in the Eternal City for two years.

Guido Marini arrived much earlier, in 2007, when Benedict XVI asked him to be his master of ceremonies.
