The Pope sent a telegram to the Prime Minister of Iraq to express his closeness following an assassination attempt on the politician's life. The Pope called the attack a “vile act of terrorism” and assured the Prime Minister of his prayers for his family and country.

Prime Minister Mustafa Al-Kadhimi survived a drone attack on his home in Baghdad. No one was killed by the explosives, though several bodyguards were injured.

Following the initial confusion, the Prime Minister wrote on Twitter.

-“I am fine, praise be to God, among my people, and I call for calm and restraint from everyone, for the sake of Iraq.”

No group has claimed responsibility for the attack.

The incident comes after weeks of tension in Iraq between security forces and pro-Iranian parties who, for nearly a month, have been protesting against the results of the last elections, where they lost nearly two thirds of their seats.
