How can we teach kids about the saints? It's the question Juan Pablo Navarro seeks to answer. He published these illustrated books with the goal of sharing the example of their main characters.

“I published these books not for commercial reasons, but because I think their content is interesting. A Christian knows that the only important thing in life is to be a saint. That's why it's good to be familiar with the best examples of sainthood.”

They're simple stories that introduce characters like St. Ignatius of Loyola, St. Claire of Assisi and St. Padre Pio in a very human way, even sharing some of their flaws. The author wants them to be accessible so that readers can imitate them.

-“The books don't try to portray the saints as they often were, which is like perfect little angels from heaven since the day they were born.”

That's why Juan Pablo Navarro talks about them in a very simple way. Each book has different fonts and colors, highlighted words and short summaries so anyone can learn about these characters, even if they aren't used to reading.

“Something else we have to keep in mind is that with children's books, it's often parents who read them to their kids. With these books, they can choose the best reading level for their kids. If a child is very advanced, parents can read the entire book to them. If instead, they only want to read them a small part of the book, in five minutes, then they can stick to the bold.”

But Juan Pablo Navarro's target audience isn't just children. The author, who read lots of comics as a child, thinks these stories can also help adults.

“The 'Asterix' comics reading level was for young children, but when you read them as an adult, you realize that Goscinny uses many plays on words that you only understand as an adult. The world of children's books talks about a beginning, but not an end. It tells you at what age you can start reading a book, but not at what age you can stop reading. Children's books are for people of all ages.”

It's a reminder that it's never too late to let ourselves be surprised by stories we thought we knew by heart. And encouragement to revisit them as adults.
