Pope Francis remains in Rome's Gemelli Hospital recovering from a respiratory infection that forced him to cancel several of his events this week.

According to the Holy See Press Office, his “condition is progressively improving.” He will still need a few days of medical care in the hospital due to his advanced age—something that he spoke about after turning 80 in 2016.

POPE FRANCIS
For some days now, I've had a word in my head; an ugly expression: old age. It is scary, to say the least. When one sees it as a stage of life to give joy, wisdom and hope, though, one starts to live again.

Despite his knee pain, colon operation and current respiratory infection, Pope Francis' health does not limit his daily life. He usually gets up at 4:30 in the morning, prays for four hours and works at least nine hours a day.

My health is a bit 'capricious' because I have this knee problem that makes it difficult to walk. It's annoying but it's getting better. At least I can walk. Two weeks ago I couldn't do anything.

Though his physical strength may be limited, those close to the Pope, such as the General Secretary of the Synod, Cardinal Mario Grech, say he remains as alert as ever.

Pope Francis unfortunately has an ailment now in his knee, but believe me, his head and his heart are as clear as ever.

Pope Francis will remain in the hospital until he is fully recovered. He has expressed his gratitude for the messages and prayers he has received.
