Dozens of protesters took to the streets of Washington, D.C. to call for the release of Meriam Ibrahim, a young Sudanese woman raised as a Muslim, and sentenced to death on charges of apostasy for marrying a Christian man.
Months after her arrest, Meriam remains jailed, and even gave birth in prison to her second child, who she named Maya. The International Christian Concern, and 39 other human rights and faith based groups, organized two public protests. ;
The first took place outside the White House. Several U.S. Congressmen joined the protest, calling on the U.S, government to take greater action, since Meriam's husband is an American citizen, and potentially, their children as well. ;
The second protests took place outside the Sudanese Embassy to the United States. Organizers delivered 10,000 signatures from people around the world asking the Sudanese government to free Meriam and her children from prison.
Lawyers have appealed her death sentence and an appeals court in Karthoum, the nation's capital, began hearings on the case days ago. It's unsure how long the process could take, but pressure from protests like this one, could lead to a more favorable outcome.
