Józef Wesolowski, the former papal nuncio to the Dominican Republic, was formally placed under house arrest at the Vatican yesterday.

In a statement released by Vatican spokesman Fr. Federico Lombardi, Wesolowski was summoned by the Vatican's Promoter of Justice to face indictment charges.

The former nuncio was accused of sexually abusing minors supposedly committed during his stay in the Dominican Republic, between 2008 and 2013.

At this time, he is no longer a bishop or a priest. The Congregation of the Doctrine of the Faith removed his clerical status back in June. Instead of a prison cell, he was placed under house arrest inside Vatican City due to his health condition.

Fr. Lombardi stated that the indictment was due to the expressed desire of Pope Francis that the case 'be addressed without delay and 'with just and necessary rigor.
