The Pope's trip to the U.S is just a few months away. Given the Pope's great focus on the environment, the White House is taking notice. ;

It recently honored 12 religious leaders, who are leading initiatives to protect Mother Nature. ;

Among them is Sister Joan Brown. A Franciscan Sister from the Rochester, Minnesota Franciscan Community. Under her own initiative she promotes programs that encourage renewable energy and local food. She works with people of faith to see how they too can have an impact on the local, state and national level. ;

Then, there's also, Rabbi Marc Soloway, from Boulder Colorado. His synagogue, was the first to implement a zero waste policy. It supports local food initiatives and has solar panels as its light source. ;

Huda Alkaff is the Founder of the Islamic Environmental Group of Wisconsin. In addition to having taught environmental studies, she is also the founding member of the Interfaith Earth Network and she collaborates with the ;Milwaukee Environmental Consortium Board of Directors. ;

Representing a younger crowd, there's Rachel Lamb. She lives in Michigan and is the Chair of the Steering Committee for Young Evangelicals for Climate Action. Her group provides college environmental fellowships at home and abroad.

The Pope's encyclical titled 'Laudato Si' is sure to be a point of focus during his September trip to the U.S, especially in light of his scheduled speech to the United Nations and U.S Congress. ;
