Pope Francis has approved Sister Leonella Sgorbati's status as a martyr.

The nun was assassinated in Somalia in September 2006, just days after an address from Benedict XVI. In it, the pope emeritus offended Muslims by quoting various insults directed at Mohammed.

Although Benedict XVI explained the opinion wasn't his own, it sparked strong reactions against him.

The assassination of Sister Leonella was considered retaliation, though its true motive was never determined.

The nun had been training new nurses in Africa for 30 years.
