“Your Holiness. It's a pleasure to meet you, too. It's an honor to present my credentials to you today.”
“Thank you very much.”

Callista Gingrich presented her credentials to Pope Francis. The new U.S. Ambassador was accompanied by her husband, a former Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives.

“Holy Father, this is my husband Newt Gingrich.”

Gingrich is the third woman to occupy this position since 1984, when both nations developed stable diplomatic relations. The pope presented her with the three main documents from his papacy.

The ambassador will face a delicate period, as the pope is concerned by some of Donald Trump's decisions.

The decision to move the United States embassy to Jerusalem caused Pope Francis to make a public call for peace in the Holy Land.

POPE FRANCIS
“Everyone should be committed to respecting the city's status quo, in accordance with the pertinent UN resolutions.”

Care for the environment and management of the migrant and refugee crisis are two other points on which Trump and the pope disagree.

Relations between the Holy See and the United States begin a new era. The Holy Father's visit to the White House in 2015 is a thing of the past. It was shortly after Cuba and the United States recognized the pope's important role in ending decades of tension between the two nations
