“He looked good. He's very busy, for sure, also very worried. He said he was very worried about what's happening in Mexico. It's strange, so many deaths... He says they killed two priests. We also spoke about Argentina, which he's concerned about, too.”

The pope presented the head of the Grandmothers of Plaza de Mayo with this information during their meeting in the Vatican. The activist came to Rome to request more help in the search for those missing since the Argentinian dictatorship.

The Holy See allowed victims' relatives to access archives to look for clues to the whereabouts of their loved ones. However, the process is slow.

“I came to renew my request to the Church. I left him an explicit letter. In the letter, it exposes some difficulties for some people who want new information because the process is very long, very time-consuming. It requires the Argentinian justice system to take on the case, to study the findings, and finally to send them here and see if they match up.”

De Carlotto says the Vatican's assistance is producing results because there are people who were able to uncover important information about their relatives.

The association reports 30,000 people disappeared during the dictatorship, and their newborn infants were put up for adoption. In the organization's 40 years of existence, its been able to find 127 of these children.
