This is not your typical hard rock band, not thematically or visually. If this says anything, they've been nicknamed the “priest rockers.”

La Voz del Desierto, or “The Voice in the Desert,” is a Spanish Christian group that is more than content with being unconventional. In a modern world full of fleeting satisfaction, this band aims to be a constant reminder of the true source of happiness.

DANIEL GÓMEZ
Singer
“There are very many phrases asking, 'Why are we divided when God is one?' or 'Why do we do what we feel like when really, God wants to make us happy?' God is who He is. God is God in our life, and what He wants us to be is happy.”

While the group's message certainly stands out, so too does its composition – three out of seven members are priests. Bound by the common goal of sharing Jesus Christ with the world, they founded La Voz del Desierto in a diocese near Madrid 15 years ago.

To date, the band has released six albums, including 2017's “Tu rostro buscaré” – or “I will search for your face.” The lead single, “Yo Soy Quien Soy” (I Am Who I Am), takes its name from the voice of God in a Bible verse, one with profound significance for members.

ALEJANDRO DE DIOS
Guitarist
“That's something that I personally need in my life. I need to cling to that certainty to be able to go forward, to not allow myself to drown in the waters like Peter did, but rather to hold on to the firm rock, which is Jesus.”

After performing near home at World Youth Day 2011 in Madrid, the group will now have the opportunity to bring its music to Latin America when it features at World Youth Day 2019 in Panama.

JOSÉ CORTÉS
Drummer
“We're so happy to be able to share it with so many countries; so many Latin American countries; so many brothers and sisters united witnessing the evangelization of Jesus Christ, the one who truly gives life and an opportunity. The pope is calling us. We as musicians, are called to do it. Without a doubt, it's our responsibility. If we didn't do it, we wouldn't be carrying out his mission.”

Before making its way to Panama, La Voz del Desierto will be on tour in the United States. Regardless of where they're called to perform, they'll hear the same voice.
