Fr. Willie Doyle was an Irish Jesuit priest who served and died as military chaplain during World War I. He was renowned for courageously jumping out of trenches to attend to wounded and dying soldiers.

This new book offers a compilation of Fr. Doyle's spiritual writings and letters during the war. According to Dr. Patrick Kenny, editor of “To Raise the Fallen,” Fr. Doyle touched the lives of many people, even canonized saints.

“St. Josemaria Escriva, founder of Opus Dei, read a Spanish translation of the original biography written about Fr. Doyle. This had such a big impact on him that he decided to recommend the book to some of the early members of Opus Dei. He wrote regularly about him and encouraged people to follow Fr. Doyle's spiritual practices. Mother Teresa also learned about Fr. Doyle when she was in Ireland as a nun; and she also adopted some of his spiritual practices.”

Fr. Doyle's influence was not only just confined to famous saints, but also to many people from across the globe.

“Just 14 years after he died, the Irish Jesuits had received over 6,000 letters reporting favors allegedly through Fr. Doyle's intercession. These letters came from everywhere in the world. Almost 2,000 letters from the United States, letters from all five continents; and from every sector of life.”

During a time of skepticism about Catholicism and priesthood, Patrick Kenny believes Fr. Doyle is an example for others. He notes how even Fr. Doyle offered up his life and all his suffering in reparation for the sins of priests.

“What we see in the life of Fr. Doyle is a priest who laid down his life for others.” “People are curious as to whether we can trust priests. You can absolutely trust somebody who is willing to lay down their life for you. This is what Fr. Doyle did. He holds up a very high standard of Christian virtue and charity for us'

Patrick Kenny hopes this book can help give people more insight into Fr. Doyle's spiritual life; and his advice to others in living Christian virtue.
