Card. Barbarin traveled to Rome to present his resignation to the pope.

He and the pope met privately. The Vatican and the Archdiocese of Lyon published this photo the day after the meeting.

On Tuesday, the archdiocese said Pope Francis did not accept the cardinal's resignation, “invoking the presumption of innocence.” It is therefore left to Card. Barbarin to ultimately decide his next move.

For the time being, Card. Philippe Barbarin has chosen to withdraw from his duties. The diocese will now be under the guidance of the Vicar General.

Card. Barbarin was sentenced to six months imprisonment for failing to report a pedophile priest in his diocese. The French cardinal still has time to appeal his sentence.
