Every August 29 marks the International Day Against Nuclear Tests. It was established in 2009 in memory of the closure of the Semipalatinsk Polygon, the main nuclear testing facility for the former Soviet Union.

Yet, still today, the danger of nuclear tests remains an international threat.

POPE FRANCIS

'There is urgent need to work for a world free of nuclear weapons, in full application of the non-Proliferation Treaty, in letter and spirit, with the goal of a complete prohibition of these weapons.'

Nuclear weapons are inherently the most dangerous weaponry on the planet.

Currently, organizations such as the De Gasperi Foundation are studying dangers that might arise if the ghost of a nuclear war is rekindled.

De Gasperi Foundation has been promoting the website freedomanatomy.com, to deepen defense especially the contributions by NATO, the North Atlantic Treaty Organization.

The project was presented in the 40th edition of the Rimini Meeting earlier in August.

“With this exhibition we want to show the deep importance of the Atlantic Alliance even after more than 50 years since its foundation because the characteristics of global security are changing a lot. Therefore, no country, no person can be considered safe. Everyone must continually organize and adapt to new challenges.”

The project “Freedom aNATOmy” is an educational website, containing data and interactive maps.

Thanks to the exhibition, attendees at the Rimini Meeting were able to learn the NATO's values, organization and contribution to peace, along with the current challenges in international security.

“Freedom aNATOmy” project
'As Pope Francis says when he talks about the piecemeal World War III we are experiencing today, threats not only limited to military. They are linked to the use of economic tools, propaganda, improper use of the internet, 'Fake News', cyber attacks, and terrorism. Many aspects continue to make the enemy less visible. Thus even though we don't know where the danger is coming from, we must be able to defend ourselves.'

The Freedom aNATOmy project aims to be a tool bringing greater attention to global citizens who want to know the areas of crisis and security strategies at an international level.
