The Melbourne Cup is considered one of the most intense horse races around. It's an event Michelle Payne dreams of winning from an early age.

The film, “Ride Like a Girl,” directed by Rachel Griffiths, is inspired by the true story of this Australian jockey. It shows her father's initial reluctance to let her start training when she is still so young.

“You let the others ride with different trainers. Why can't I?”

“Because you're not ready!”

“I'm ready, dad!”

Eventually, Michelle gets her chance and finds her life's passion. Nothing her friends and family say can keep her from following her dreams.

“You're out of your mind. Get married, go traveling and have kids.”

“I don't see you telling your husbands to give up.”

“A girl's never going to win the cup, mate.”

With her father and brother's unconditional support, she is able to overcome the obstacles that come with being a woman in a male-dominated sport.

With International Women's Day coming up on March 8, “Ride Like a Girl,” first released in 2019, is sure to inspire women everywhere to never give up on their dreams.
