But a few hours later he would undergo surgery.
The Vatican explained that it was a “symptomatic diverticular stenosis of the colon.”
It was a scheduled operation, not an emergency one.

“The operation is called resection of the large intestine, which is the part that goes before the rectum. The inflamed part is removed, about 20 centimeters of intestine more or less, and the parts are joined. As if it were a tube in which you remove the part in the middle and join the ends.”
Gabriella Capolupo explains that this operation has nothing to do with the Pope’s sciatica.
According to experts, it requires about three days of recovery, and complications are rare.
